St. Louis man pleads guilty in fatal drunken driving crash

ST. LOUIS • Calvin Collins, 44, pleaded guilty today to involuntary manslaughter, drug trafficking, and marijuana possession in St. Louis Circuit Court for driving a car the wrong way on Interstate 70 and causing a crash that killed Michael Owens, 35, on January 10, 2010.

Collins could face up to 31 years in prison when he is sentenced June 10.

St. Loius police said Collins, of the 3900 block of McRee Avenue, was intoxicated and had a blood alcohol level of .159, almost twice the legal limit of .08, when he drove the wrong way at about 12:30 a.m. that morning on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near O'Fallon Park. He collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Owens, of the 3600 block of South Compton Avenue.

Police said they also found cocaine and marijuana on Collins at the time of the crash.
