Woman killed in Kansas and Broadmoor crash
Springfield Police say a 29-year-old woman has died after a crash this morning on Kansas Expressway and Broadmoor Street.
The woman was turning from Broadmoor Street to head southbound on Kansas Expressway about 8:30 this morning, when the silver Pontiac Sunfire was broadsided by a white full-size pickup.
The woman’s view was obstructed by a slowing school bus in the outside lane when she pulled into the path of the pick-up travelling in the inside lane, Lt. Jim McCulloch said.
The woman was taken to a Springfield hospital, as well as a young boy who was a passenger in the pickup truck.
Police said the woman died later this morning.
They will not identify her until they have identified her next of kin.
McCulloch said the boy’s injuries were minor.
Lonnie Kirkey, who lives on Broadmoor Street near Kansas Expressway, said she heard the crash at around 8:30 a.m.
“It’s not unusual to have an accident here,” said Kirkey, who has lived at the corner home since 1977.
“This is the worst one, though.”
Kirkey said she went outside after calling 911 and saw the wreckage.
She said the driver of the school bus had stopped and used an extinguisher to put out a small fire that had started in the Pontiac.
