An 18-year-old driver that allegedly ran a red light at Fifth Street and Lawrence on Saturday morning was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
Police said Brady E. Cheffy, 18, of the 3500 block of East Cook Street was eastbound on Lawrence approaching the Fifth Street intersection. Cheffy ran the red light and collided with another vehicle, which was driving south on Fifth Street.
Four people involved in the crash were taken to St. John’s Hospital, where they were treated and released.
The impact pushed the other vehicle, which was driven by Jay R. Privott, 64, of the 3100 block of Rita Avenue, into a 3-foot-high concrete wall and a traffic light.
Privott’s vehicle stopped after rolling over onto its passenger side.
Privott, along with Laci E. Rebbe, 19, of the 1200 block of North 14th Street were taken to St. John’s Hospital.
Cheffy and a passenger in his vehicle, Zakery A. Rule, 18, of the 3500 block of North Dirksen Parkway were also taken to St. John’s Hospital.
Cheffy said he ran the red light because his brakes malfunctioned. A witness who was driving behind Cheffy’s vehicle on Lawrence said his brake lights came on, but the vehicle did not stop.
Cheffy is also being charged with manufacture/delivery of cannabis under 30 grams. Police cited him for speeding and driving without liability insurance.
