Pedestrian dies after being struck by car in Granite City

Police said a pedestrian was fatally injured at 6:34 a.m. Tuesday when he was struck by a car on 20th Street near Nash Street.

Maj. Jeff Connor said Gary W. Hildreth, 64, of Granite City apparently had just finished his shift at U.S. Steel and was attempting to cross the street to his vehicle, which was parked on the other side. Hildreth was struck by an eastbound car, Conner said.

Hildreth was taken to a St. Louis hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:35 a.m.

Conner said the driver of the car was a 34-year-old man from Granite City. No charges had been filed pending further investigation.

Police initially did not believe Hildreth was crossing the street in a crosswalk but said further investigation indicated that he was in the crosswalk.
