Girl seriously injured when struck by car

A Springfield girl was taken to a local hospital Wednesday with serious injuries after being hit by a car in front of her north Springfield home, according to the Springfield Police Department.

The investigation of the 2:30 p.m. incident in the 2200 block of North Taylor Avenue is continuing, according to Sgt. Tom Luellen.

Witnesses said the 4-year-old was playing with friends and had been running back and forth across the street, Luellen said.

The girl ran from behind her mother's parked car into the street, he said.

"The girl ran out from behind that vehicle, and was hit by another car," he said.

The northbound vehicle that hit the child was driven by a man in his 30s, Luellen said.

Investigators will try to determine the vehicle's speed and other factors involved in the incident, he said.
