Motorcyclist hit by van

A Sherman motorcyclist remained in critical condition Tuesday at St. John's Hospital following a crash with a van early Sunday.

Jarett N. Smiley, 40, the cyclist was injured when struck by a van about 12:45 a.m. at Dirksen Parkway and Sangamon Avenue. According to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, Smiley was turning north onto Dirksen from Sangamon. The van, driven by Robert L. Earl, 70, of Springfield, was westbound on Sangamon.

Earl told police he had a green light and that the motorcycle pulled out in front of him. A friend of Smiley's was riding a motorcycle next to Smiley and told police he and Smiley had a green arrow.

A passenger on Smiley's motorcycle, Michelle R. Crawford, 39, of Springfield, suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. John's Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition. Earl was uninjured. Both vehicles were towed.

Sheriff's deputies issued no tickets because of conflicting accounts of what happened.
