Three-vehicle accident at Fifth and Carpenter

A Virden woman allegedly ran a red light at Fifth Street and Carpenter Street Tuesday morning, leading to a three-vehicle accident.

Betty L. Smith, 78, reportedly was eastbound on Carpenter when she ran the red light. Smith’s car hit one driven by Jay B. Baskett, 78, of the 400 block of East Jefferson Street and his car in turn was pushed into one driven by Jeffrey Roberts, 27, of Waverly. They were both southbound on Fifth Street.
