Crash sends woman to hospital

One woman was taken to St. John’s Hospital with chest pains after a Harvel man crashed his vehicle into two others at Fifth and Monroe streets Friday evening.

James Hitchings, 75, was heading south on Fifth around 6:15 p.m., approaching Monroe, according to a police report. Two southbound motorists in front of him were stopped at a red light.

One of the stopped vehicles was in the left lane; the other was in the middle lane. Hitchings, who was driving in both lanes, was unable to stop and struck both vehicles, police said.

Neither Hitchings nor the drivers of the other two vehicles — Sarah N. Thompson, 21, of Greenview and Adam E. Raboin, 26, or the 2000 block of Vachel Lindsay Road — was injured.
But a passenger in Hitchings’ vehicle, Mary Thiel, 52, of Loveland, Ohio, was taken to St. John’s with chest pains. Her condition was not available Saturday.
Hitchings was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
