One driver seriously hurt in wreck in downtown KC

A wreck in downtown Kansas City Saturday night damaged five vehicles and seriously injured one driver.

An old tow truck collided with a vehicle at Ninth and Wyandotte streets about 5:10 p.m., knocking the vehicle on its side and shoving it into three parked cars. A police investigation showed the truck ran a stop sign, Sgt. Police Jim Fuller said.

Ruth Schmidt said she was volunteering at an outdoor festival nearby when she looked over and saw firefighters on top of her Saturn View, which had been parked on Ninth.

The collision forced her Saturn onto the sidewalk and firefighters were standing on top of it to rescue the driver involved in the initial collision who was trapped in her overturned vehicle.

Schmidt saw rescuers take the driver away on a stretcher. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
