Motorcyclist in critical condition after wreck

A motorcyclist suffered serious head injuries when a car collided with him this morning at Sixth and St. Joseph streets.

Robert T. Lenhart Jr., 64, of Springfield was taken by ambulance to St. John's Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition this afternoon.

The crash happened about 6:40 a.m. According to police, Lenhart was northbound on Sixth Street on a 1997 Honda Goldwing. Matthew J. McGowan, 21, of Springfield was in a 2007 GMC 1500 pickup truck on St. Joseph Street facing west at the light. McGowan made a right turn on a red light and struck Lenhart's motorcycle as Lenhart proceeded through the intersection on a green light, police said. McGowan told police he did not see the motorcycle.

McGowan was ticketed for failing to yield.
