Crash propels vehicle into tree

A Springfield man was ticketed after an accident late Thursday that propelled a car into a tree.

Clayton H. Spain, 22, was ticketed for failing to stop at a stop sign and not having proof of insurance.
The crash happened about 11:30 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Clay Street. According to a police report, Spain was driving west and tried to cross the intersection in front of a southbound car driven by Bradley M.E. Schafer, 21, of Springfield. Spain’s car hit the driver’s side of Schafer’s vehicle, causing Schafer to lose control. His car jumped a curb and hit a tree on the corner.
Police said Spain told them Schafer was speeding. Schafer told police Spain never stopped at the intersection.
Both drivers complained of ankle pain, but both refused medical attention.
