Child struck by vehicle in Shawnee is critical

A child struck by a vehicle about 4:30 p.m. in Shawnee was transported with a critical head injury to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

The incident occurred in the 13000 block of West 70th Terrace, near Gillette Street. Police said a 62-year-old woman with a possible medical condition struck a parked vehicle, which pushed it into a 12-year-old boy.

A witness said a maroon car jumped a curb and hit a van that was parked in a driveway. The witness said the boy, whose family apparently recently moved to the neighborhood, was among three children who were playing in the yard of the house.

The driver did not appear to be injured but was transported to Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

The boy’s family was with him at Children’s Mercy.
