John Holt: Hey, welcome back. Kansas City St. Joseph Catholic Diocese is paying up tonight but not saying the two accused priests did anything wrong."
Susan Hiland: Fox 4's Lesley Carter explains why survivors of sexual abuse say this might be a step in the right direction.
Lesley Carter: Snapper, the survivors' network of those abused by priests, wants the church to stop dragging victims through the legal system. The man who just settled with the Diocese says even though the settlement did not come with an admission of guilt, it did bring him some closure.
Jason Sommers: That rectory for years was a house of evil.
Lesley Carter: St. Elizabeth's rectory late 1960's.
Samuel Wendt: My clients expressed to me that it was essentially a black hole in his memory that he literally had no recollection of.
Lesley Carter: The man who just settled with the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City - St. Joseph for $60,000 says just five years ago he remembered the abuse. He doesn't want to be identified but has named the two former priests he says abused him when he was in eighth grade: Father Thomas Reardon, who was defrocked from the priesthood, and Father Thomas O'Brien who retired in 2002. Both former priests have been accused by other alleged victims.
Samuel Wendt: My client was wanting to get on with his life. We were able to get him a good result and he was really just happy to have this behind him.
Lesley Carter: This settlement is not an admission of guilt. In a written statement, Monsignor Robert Murphy says he wished he could have met with the man; he says, quote "My heart aches for every victim and for every priest who is trying to live his vocation. A written apology rings hallow."
Kay Goodnow: Whatever we do, it may protect a child.
